DITCH THE TOOLS
Recently whilst catching up on my beauty reading I came across a clever article in Stylist mag about ditching your beauty tools and utilising the use of your hands instead. As a self-confessed brushaholic, the article inspired me to give it a go, so on bank holiday weekend I ditched the tools, washed my hands and got started…
I’ve always been a fan of applying foundation with my hands, especially the more water based formulas like Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua. I started by applying the Hourglass mineral veil primer, using the flat part of my hands to smooth it over my face creating a silky base. I then took a small amount of foundation on the back of my hand and using my index and middle finger I slowly worked it into the skin just on the places I need it. I find working the foundation into the skin really makes it look natural and stops it sitting on top of your skin which is what often makes it look cakey.
I then took my favourite Bobbi Brown corrector and used my ring finger and my thumb to warm it up, making it easier to blend. I always use my ring finger under my eyes as it’s the most gentle, make sure never to drag the skin, pat it instead! I did the same with the Rimmel Wake Me Up concealer which is new to my routine and I’m loving it so far! I applied this under my eyes, around my nose and on my chin before blending with my finger.
To create a subtle bronze glow I used the Chantecaille Radiance Gel Bronzer, patting it between my fingers before applying a very small amount to the contours of my cheeks, my temples and down my nose. To blend this in I patted slowly and quickly and it left the most subtle, gorgeous bronzed glow. I then applied the Stila convertible in Gerbera by using my middle finger to take quite a lot of product from the pan, dotting it on the apples of my cheeks and then blending up using my middle and index finger. This gives a really natural flush, perfect for a relaxed makeup look.
On my eyes I used the cream eyeshadow that never fails me, the Maybelline Colour Tattoo 24hr in ‘On and On Bronze’. I used my index finger to have good control and apply the perfect amount all over the lid, blending out the edges. To finish the eyes I used a bit of mascara, does that count as a tool?! If I could apply mascara with my fingers I would have!
On my lips I used my ring finger to warm up the YSL lipstick from the bullet before dabbing it onto my lips to create a natural stain that lasted for hours! To finish off the overall look I reached for my Topshop highlighting quad using the lightest colour with my little finger on the inner corners of the eye and the champagne colour with my middle finger as a highlight on my cheekbones, down my nose and on my cupid’s bow.
Although in writing it seems like quite a long process, this look took only minutes and I loved the finished look! It’s refreshing to change up old habits sometimes, so try applying your entire makeup routine with your hands and let me know if you also like how it comes out!
